Twain, Russell, and McGovern on War

Here's a Quote Round-Up concerning man's war on man, woman, and child...how I wish young men of all persuasions would just say, No!

"Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War. He is the only one that gathers his brethren about him and goes forth in cold blood and calm pulse to exterminate his kind. He is the only animal that for sordid wages will march out...and help to slaughter strangers of his own species who have done him no harm and with whom he has no quarrel.... And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for "the universal brotherhood of man" - with his mouth." Mark Twain

"Patriots always talk of dying for their country and never of killing for their country." Bertrand Russell (attributed)

"I'm fed up to the ears with old men dreaming up wars for young men to die in." George McGovern

actually mark twain is not correct - chimpanzees baboons and other primates do this too (wage war. They can also blush, and experience also practise empathy and altruism) I don't know whether such information eases your thoughts about man's inhumanity towards everything - but its worthwhile to strive for accuracy.

Yes, they do wage war as we now know.

Perhaps 'Mark Twain' wasn't hangin' out with very many chimps in the olden days.

Still this is a quote from an historical figure in American history and he expressed his opinion in his time with his past experiences informing his views.

Thanks for clearing him up for 2009! Jude

Yeah ol' "Mark Twain" wasn't as au fait with the animal kingdom as we are. Lol. Although we have a long way to go. Keep posting your fascinating insights. cheers

Why thanks! (Twain's writing has always been a fascination of mine!) ;p
