"The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. "
-Franklin D. Roosevelt, "Message from the President of the United States Transmitting Recommendations Relative to the Strengthening and Enforcement of Anti-trust Laws"

ReplyDeleteI still haven't figured out why all the cries about socialism, when fascism seems to be the real and immediate threat.....and why Tea Partiers, in their movement against big government and socialism, have allowed themselves to be corraled by...those who would be fascists?
It only underscores for me how many voting Americans are really just ignorant. Just identify the real enemy, please. Maybe if the media replaced the words "corporatism" and "big banks" with words like "fascism" and "fascist corporate entities," it would become more clear? Instead, Republicans have them blaming poor people and the involuntarily unemployed, accusing them of sponging off government. What a cout!
By the way, the Google verification for this comment is 'mussessu,' which is fitting, because it looks and sounds like Mussolini to me.
Thanks, Teri, well-said. It's crazy how the powers that be mix up historical references and turn them into slogans and political labels meant to keep the American people divided and conquered.
ReplyDeleteWe're now wired for kneejerk responses to certain words w little or no depth of understanding of what they really mean. We can't honestly discuss historical terms like "blood lust" w/out a lightweight social climber using it to push emotional buttons in an attempt to muddy issues and avoid the societal ills we need to squarely face and deal with.
Ah, America! How they built you up only to knock you down...w ace manipulation and propaganda in between. Of course, dumbing us down w mediocre education has much to do w it. And more dumbing down on the way, the borry sastards. jc
"Ah, America! How they built you up only to knock you down..."
ReplyDeleteApt description, Jude, to which I will add another: America is simply punch-drunk by this point.
