With an occupying army waging war in Iraq and Afghanistan, with military bases and corporate bullying in every part of the world, there is hardly a question any more of the existence of an American Empire. Indeed, the once fervent denials have turned into a boastful, unashamed embrace of the idea.

Yeah, he is -- always will be -- an American treasure, alongside Studs Terkel in my opinion. I wish there was a timed birthchart -- I can only find 8/24/22, Brooklyn, NY. Born and died on Saturn-Pluto squares, died on his third Saturn return.
Bob Herbert (NY Times) had a piece about him last week, referring to a recent lunch meeting they had. Might be worth a look.
