On John Steinbeck's Life, Death, and Saturn

by Jude Cowell, partisan for the common good

"It is the nature of man as he grows older...to protest against change, particularly change for the better." John Steinbeck

However, current changes proposed for the American people and our government are definitely not for the better. See Project 2025 Ideas Have Failed Before.

And so today, SO'W departs from the hateful realm of US politics to consider the life, death, and a few flawed personality traits of one of America's greatest authors, John Steinbeck (C-rated horoscope shown). His novels, some controversial in their time, such as The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, Cannery Row - the list goes on and if you need to check them out, a Thought Company list provides an overview, plus, added are few biographical details concerning Steinbeck as well.

And yet this Great-Depression-era author could be considered an appropriate subject for a Political Astrology spotlight because the writer's topics during his era, such as greed and the suffering leveled against America's working class by plutocrats such as bankers, politicians, and others of an exploitative nature - are the same crimes against humanity that elite classes continue to perpetrate in our day. Yes, Mr. Steinbeck's 6th house Saturn in Capricorn was strongly determined toward career sucess, but for me, it's his sadistic treatment of his wives and children that land him in the character flaw category. In this, Steinbeck's similarity to the current crop of Republican cabinet member nominees is apparent. Misogyny then, misogyny now. In fact, they share a strong-armed paternalism of cruelty and control.

And yes, there are indications in the author's natal chart of trouble with Mama and thus in adulthood, serious issues with women. His Scorpio Moon squares his Mercury-Venus conjunction (planetary signature of a popular writer) and Luna also squares Jupiter (an aspect of taking the easy way out, and one that can lead to religious zealotry - perhaps his Mom's?). Plus, there's a complex sesqui-square with spiritual Neptune, a suggestion of deception, misunderstandings about or with Mother, and/or overblown religious beliefs. Plus, a Scorpio Moon can be problematic and suggests difficulties of its own: some form of betrayal is possible, or perhaps the smother mother syndrome afflicted John in childhood.

Meanwhile, Steinbeck's natal Sun in Pisces fares little better other than his deep well of imaginative creativity via Pisces, but serious health threats were suffered in his younger years (Sun = Saturn-MC: illness with Pisces often a sign of contagion or infection). Understandably, these weakening experiences marked him with depressive tendencies. And then there's his natal Ascendant (physical body) in Leo, sign of vitality - that's Leo, sign of the heart.

A Recommended Documentary: John Steinbeck: Flawed Genius. (You may need to rewind.)

As for his double water Sun Pisces-Moon Scorpio blend, a measure of intuition is obvious along with brilliant creativity, and overflowing feelings. The will to expose hardship and the exploitation of others (but not of his family's, it seems) was clearly expressed in his literary works. Yet we know that turbulent relationships often come along with this passionate combination of conscious-unconscious energies as can a tendency toward harboring irrational suspicions (Sun Sign-Moon Sign, Charles and Suzi Harvey #ad).

So click the link, above, for a view of his natal horoscope as you wish. No need to show it here as a stand-alone chart so how about a speculatively timed Death Horoscope for the cold-hearted, emotionally complicated yet talented John Steinbeck surrounding his natal horoscope so that we see the two Angular planets of destructive energies, Mars and Saturn, upon his natal MC-IC axis - and 1968 Saturn at Rx station and defiantly demanding a major change of direction:

March 4, 2021: Trump's "Shadow Inauguration"?

February 7, 2021: How Pathetic Can One Man's Ego Be?

by Jude Cowell

Answer: Off the charts, it seems. One of the oddest 'QAnon' theories of late is noted in a January 2021 article published on vice dot com that: Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 19th president of the United States on March 4, 2021. Might a peek at a speculative (fantasy-based from agent orange's Mercury-Neptune square of deception and misperception) "Shadow Inauguration Horoscope" interest you? Me, too. Besides, everyone is quite familiar by now with agent orange's fantasy-based Mercury-Neptune square of deception and misperception that inspires and generates his tiresome spinning of tall tales and his lamentable inability to deal with, or hear, the truth.

As for setting up a horoscope, the problem is, I've found no hour or location for the proposed ego-laced event so I've set the following March 4, 2021 Horoscopes for 12:00 pm in Mar-A-Lago, Florida (upper right) and Washington DC (lower left) for your viewing pleasure. These locations at noon give us some indication of the March 4th cosmic weather if (or not!) such an event takes place at all. My notes are penned on the image but I'll add a few Sun Pisces-Moon Scorpio details below the image because they seem in my opinion to fit the man and the day's conditions quite well.

Mar-A-Lago vs Washington DC

You'll note that in DC the chart-ruler is the Scorpio Moon (changes; publicity) while in Florida it's oath-taking Mercury (also changes, and transactions). As you see, Mercury conjuncts wide-girthed Jupiter at the "A Man Unmasked" degree denoting far-reaching plans of a legal nature (9th house). Plus, Venus and Saturn - together a dissatisfied pair - are the only planets that change houses between the two locations.

With Mars rising in his natal chart, Trump is often associated with planet Mars, and here in 12th house, we have a cosmic picture of a man who deeply feels the erosion of his personal power. Plus, contentious warrior Mars conjuncts fixed star Alcyone which gives him something to cry about. However, for Trump, we should probably add whine to the star's to-do list.

Meanwhile, the Scorpio Moon tilts the rim of a BOWL shape of planets suggesting a self-contained personality focused on ambition and career (10th house is inside the BOWL). People advocating for a cause or a mission may also be indicated although they're working with limited experience of the world.

But note the Syzygy Moon @8Vir57 (the Full Moon of February 27th - disrupts and reveals like a Lunar Eclipse) at the IC (Basis of the Matter) in Washington which, by degree, re-activates the 19 North Solar Eclipse of September 1, 2016 @9Vir21 - the Prenatal Eclipse of Election 2016 and of Inauguration 2017. Cosmically imprinted upon his White House tenure, 19 North themes have remained applicable during the 'Trump era' (which he seeks to expand) and perhaps you remember them: "realism; coming down to earth; becoming aware of an old situation and seeing it for what it really is; a good time for tackling the truth" (paraphrasing Brady's Predictive Astrology) #ad. Perhaps you also remember that transit Neptune, planet of deception, fraud, and grand schemes, opposed the 19 North Eclipse and has managed to muddy every issue possible with lies and fantasies while sojourning in the mid-degrees of Pisces where masking Neptune resides in the Republican Party founding horoscope/s of 1854.

And so in 2021, members of the Republican Party continue ill-advised attempts to "vouch" for arch deceiver and saboteur extraordinaire Donald Trump, no matter what it costs the people of the United States of America.

Now here are dual horoscopes for March 4, 2021's proposed "Shadow Inauguration" of the reviled con man with mobster ties, Donald Trump, an albatross around America's neck if there ever was one:

Now the Double Water blend of Sun Pisces-Moon Scorpio (vibes of Jupiter-Neptune and Mars-Pluto) describes an emotionally biased, intensely subjective combination of conscious and unconscious energies. Scathingly critical, this blend suggests those who are ruled by their emotions, opinions, and convictions (if only!), and tend to feel right at home in the underworld. Stubborn and cantankerous, this brooding combo denotes those with vivid imaginations and a dominating personality which relies on sensationalism. Using any manipulation necessary in order to gain and grasp the reins of power, Sun Pisces-Moon Scorpio types can be strong in adversity, intensely intuitive, prejudiced, and irrationally suspicious.

This blend is shared natally by author John Steinbeck, and in their book Sun Sign-Moon Sign, the Harveys suggest a couple of 'Images for Integration', one of which (you may agree) closely applies to the grudge-holding fellow with the pathetically huge ego:

For it is, "The Grapes of Wrath."

Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Sun Pisces-Moon Scorpio

Collection of the Supreme Court of the United States; by Steve Petteway [Public domain]

Brief Astro-Notes re: Ruth Bader Ginsburg

November 5, 2019: Since the natal horoscope and data of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader-Ginsburg, pictured above, are rated X (date with no accurate time), and because she likely will be the Justice who will decide on an upcoming case involving scofflaw Donald Trump (poetic justice!), I'm typing a few notes concerning Justice Ginsburg's personality blend using her double Water Pisces-Scorpio Sun-Moon combo of conscious + unconscious energies.

Related: Ian Millhiser's November 4th Vox article A federal court of appeals just demolished Trump's claim of immunity from criminal investigation.

Born Ruth Joan Bader on March 15, 1933 in Brooklyn, King's County, New York, her Sun-Moon blend reveals her as an individual with tenacity, courage, acute perception, and a deep intellectual capacity. Emotional and intuitive, the personality of Justice Ginsburg is passionate, dedicated, and possesses deep psychological insight into other people's motives. She exhibits strength in adversity and stubbornness once a decision has been made. Unafraid of the truth, the Justice may not be easy to live with, yet has an innate desire to help and heal others who are in despair, an admirable quality in my estimation.

Her complex Sun Pisces-Moon Scorpio blend is shared by the natal charts of some interesting folk including: Johnny Cash, George Harrison, Bernadette Peters, explorer David Livingstone, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and author John Steinbeck who informs us that, "It is the nature of man as he grows older...to protest against change, particularly change for the better."

And according to Longfellow,

"Know how sublime a thing it is to suffer and be strong."

Well, I'm not certain how the Steinbeck quote applies to her but perhaps you'll agree with me that tenacious, notorious Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, cancer survivor, definitely has that last concept well covered!

In closing, here are several inspiring Quotes by Ruth Bader Ginsburg and I'd like to cherry-pick three of my favorites off the list for your consideration:

"A gender line...helps to keep women not on a pedestal, but in a cage."

"A constitution, as important as it is, will mean nothing unless the people are yearning for liberty and freedom."

"I would like to be remembered as someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability."

Astro-Notes on the Firing of Andrew McCabe

March 17, 2018: by now you've heard of the Friday night firing of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe a mere 26 hours before his scheduled retirement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Attorney General Jeff Sessions did the deed no doubt at the direction of Donald Trump who desperately wants to shut down the Mueller investigation into Trump and Trump Organization finances, funding and, shall we say, other activities.

Andrew McCabe was born on March 18, 1968 and was fired 2 days prior to his 50th birthday when he had planned to retire from service. Naturally, astrologers see that Mr.McCabe is due for his Chiron Return which occurs for everyone around the age of 50, give or take a year. Mr. McCabe's Return is aptly significant, as we see, for he was born with Sun and Chiron conjoined in late Pisces (man on a mission). Being fired from his long-held law enforcement position of authority hours before retirement and negating the receipt of a subsequent pension can certainly be considered a Chirotic wounding to his sense of mission in life and to his ego (Sun-Chiron).

And if we check for additional planetary activation, we find that transit Uranus in Aries, planet of disruption, separation, shocks, explosive events, and anger, is in process of visiting McCabe's natal Mars (23Aries) suggesting a period when endeavors (and employment) are halted or discontinued, highly charged activities are in force, shocks are felt, missteps may be taken (on his or another's part), and regrettable situations exist. Even danger cannot be ruled out.

Curiously, vibes of the Mars-Uranus pair of premature action, brutality, and radical reform were also active when former FBI Director James Comey testified on Capitol Hill in 2017 as you may see in the horoscope of Comey's Testimony June 8, 2017. The post displays both Trump's and Comey's ('noon') natal charts with June 8, 2017 planets and you can see that Mr. Comey's natal Uranus conjoined and activated Trump's natal Mars (aggression, conflict, motivation, energy, action) and Trump's Ascendant (his nibs himself) just as the transiting Dragon's Head North Node of destined encounters placed them all in a public forum televised from Capitol Hill for Mr. Comey's testimony was delivered in public as you remember.

March 18, 1968: Sun in Pisces and Moon in Scorpio the whole day through:

Now Andrew McCabe's natal Sun Pisces-Moon Scorpio 'loves a mystery' and is a double-Water blend of complex emotions and subterfuge with both signs tending to become involved with secrecy and hidden activities--perfect for membership in a spy agency like the FBI. Acutely perceptive and intuitive, Mr. McCabe can 'read people' and their deeper motives and shows endurance during times of adversity. Plus, his personality combo has the ability to "come back fighting" as we see in Mr. McCabe's released statement describing some truths the Trump Organization and Jeff Sessions wish the public to ignore.

In closing, perhaps the creative work of two natives who share the Sun Pisces-Moon Scorpio combination of conscious-unconscious energies may add to our understanding of Andrew McCabe:

"Longfellow's poem The Secret of the Sea" (the sea, Neptune's oceanic province along with veils, masks, leaks, lies and spies!) and "John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath."

(Sun Sign-Moon Sign, Charles and Suzi Harvey).

Yes, with Trump's Mars Rising, it does feel as if wrath is all around. Wonder what kingpin Trump is trying so hard to hide?

Today in Trump News: Trump Calls McCabe a "choirboy" and suggests corruption at the highest levels of the FBI. And here's the NYT article on McCabe's Firing.

March 6, 2018: Mercury to Aries Point w Stars

Horoscope Image: March 6, 2018 2:34:25 am est White House Washington DC; Cardinal Water strong; Hour of Mercury in 'its' 3rd house of Communications; chart-ruler Saturn @7Cap41 and rising with Facies (ruthlessness or the victim); Mercury and Venus conjunct Scheat (misfortune; intellect), Sun conjunct Achernar (risk of rapid endings; crisis) and remains near masking, disguising, deceptive Neptune, North Node @14Leo31 8th house points toward Dubhe (loving but forceful); Mars conjoins the prophetic Hopi 'Blue Star' Ras Alhague and the Moon-SN conjunction of Donald Trump; and the Scorpio Jupiter in 11th house inflates starry Agena (the pain of learning).

In 2nd house you see the current Solar Eclipse of February 15, 2018 (27AQ07) in the 1 South Saros Series (flooded with ideas or options--Brady) where karmic progress can be made, and the last lunation, the Syzygy Moon @11Vir22 in the corporate 8th house as is the North Node of future direction. As you see in the horoscope, the planets form a BOWL shape with the fluctuating Moon @9Sco51 in 10th house leading the planetary throng; quirky radical Uranus @26Ari09 and asteroid of grieving mothers, Niobe, conjoin the Ending or Foundation Point of the chart, the IC. Pluto at a critical degree (20Capricorn) and rising behind Saturn, both karmic planets set to meet in Great Conjunction on January 12, 2020 @23Capricorn.

Three midpoint pictures are penned on the chart; any, all, or none may apply:

Lower left, Mars-Saturn = ASC; upper right, Mars-Pluto = Saturn; mid-right, Mars-MC = Jupiter. Now planet Mars rules the Cardinal Aries Point, as you know, and planet Mars @23Sag23 rises in 12th house of Politics, Karma, and Self-Undoing after conjoining Mr. Trump's Moon and South Node conjunction and describing the anger, quarrels, and separations recently surrounding Mr. Trump.

Also of note is Chiron to Aries Point which first becomes exact April 17, 2018, again September 25, 2018, and third/last on February 18, 2019.

A Changeable Moon Fighting for Survival in Scorpio

The double Water blend of Sun Pisces-Moon Scorpio suggests a period of emotional and psychological insights and intuition, deep and complex feelings, and mental clarity for those who can transcend their personal prejudices; courage in the face of adversity may be in evidence along with the tendency to manipulate others in order to increase one's power and advantage while using scathing criticism and a fighting spirit in the process.

Sun Pisces-Moon Scorpio blend is shared natally by author John Steinbeck who perhaps puts the day's energies into context saying, "It is the nature of a man as he grows older...to protest against change, particularly change for the better."

'30Pisces' = "The Great Stone Face"..."DISCERNMENT...destiny is character."

'1Aries' = "A Woman Rises Out of the Water, a Seal Is Embracing Her"..."REALIZATION...the self cannot separate itself from its own private obsessions." (The Sabian Symbols in Astrology, Marc Edmund Jones.
