An Inaugural Address to Die For? (w/ video and a little Astrology)

Notes on the 1841 Inaugural Address of William Henry Harrison

by Jude Cowell

An hour and forty-five minutes stood President Harrison during a snowstorm (after choosing to wear no overcoat, hat, or gloves) to deliver his Inaugural Address on March 4, 1841 and it occurs to me that one or two of us should at least do Harrison the Hatless the honor of reading through it!

Is his speech wordy? Yes. Full of the extra grammatical flourishes common to the rhetoric of his day? Why, of course. And so it also occurs to me that if he'd been speaking today he might have taken about 30 minutes to utter the same felicitations, a brevity which could possibly have saved his life.

Here's a page with an excellent overview (video) of the 1840 election and President Harrison's brief term of 31 or 32 days. Harrison, chosen as nominee over Henry Clay, supported the establishment of a US central bank which puts him on my personal no-no list of anti-Constitutional presidents yet my four natal planets in history-oriented Capricorn find his era most interesting:

Now Showing:'s William Henry Harrison.

And here you may view a brief bio and natal horoscope of President Harrison (the Elder) if you wish though his birth data is rated conflicting/unverified. However, after comparing this natal chart to that of his 1841 Inaugural Address there are several interesting connections which cause me to add this version of his natal horoscope to my files: born February 9, 1773 10:38:52 am LMT Charles City, Virginia with Sun @21AQ18, Moon @20Vir09, and 15Tau12 rising with Uranus which is part of a Kite pattern of high-flying success. Plus, his Sun AQ-Moon Tau personality blend imprints him as a neurotic nitpicker who was obsessed with sanity and order. (Harveys, Sun Sign-Moon Sign.) A hypochondriac, perhaps? Well, if so, this president may be a member of the famous I Told You I Was Sick club.

"10 fascinating facts on the White House’s 222nd anniversary"

Here are 10 fascinating facts on the White House's 222nd anniversary:

But you'll find no mention of the Executive Mansion as the White Masonic Lodge that it is other than indirectly due to its 'missing' cornerstone ceremoniously laid in 1792 by Freemasons. And it's the one house in America where we know George Washington never slept!

Kristallnacht relics found from 1938

Artifacts of Kristallnacht (meaning 'Night of Broken Glass' - broken glass is signified by Saturn-Uranus which are now opposed) have been discovered near Berlin in the state of Brandenburg.

On the night of Nov 9, 1938, a pogrom against the Jews was carried out at Hitler's direction. Over 1,400 synagogues and other religious establishments and businesses across Germany and Austria were destroyed or damaged, dozens of Jews were killed, and thousands were arrested and sent to concentration camps.

In what is thought to have been a dump, journalist Yaron Svoray has discovered relics such as a glass bottle with a Star of David imprinted on it, among other things, and an investigation is in the works which include the efforts of Israel's Ghetto Fighters' Museum.

The world is nearing the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht, so I took a look at the chart for 8:53:15 pm CET, Berlin, Germany because the World Point, 00Aries00 was precisely at Midheaven at that moment in history:

ASC 27Can25, Pluto 1Leo30 Rx rising;
Saturn 12Ari17 Rx in 10th house;
Uranus 15Tau46 Rx in 11th house;

Here are the rest of the planets for the Night of Broken Glass, Kristallnacht, in hierarchical order including wounded Chiron:

Sun 16Sco46
Moon 11Gem51
Mercury 4Sag07
Venus 2Sag52 Rx
Mars 9Lib49
Jupiter 23AQ10 (now being transiting by Neptune)
Neptune 22Vir44 (basically this date was a Neptune Return for America with the Gemini Moon conj US n Desc)
Chiron 9Can45 Rx
North Node 17Sco47

As you see, Saturn and Uranus are appr 33 degrees apart and nearing their Great Conjunction of May 3, 1942 (29Tau20 - a 29th degree of crisis.) It may or may not be significant, but '33' is an important number in certain secret societies at least one of which Hitler may have been a member.

Cancer, sign of home and tradition (both of which were wounded that night) is a deeply sensitive placement for Chiron. Richard Nolle says that Chiron in Cancer is attuned to the past and may indicate a folk hero or an infamous legend.

Can we agree as to which figure Kristallnacht reminds us of?

Barbara Hand Clow gives Chiron in Cancer as: a crisis over cultural roots and/or a crisis of personal protection. Obviously, Kristallnacht was both rolled fiendishly into one.

Nolle, in his book, Chiron, goes on to say that "whether applauded or condemned by the judgment of time or their peers, these people believe deeply in whatever they do. Their actions, however controversial, stem from a deep conviction that what they are doing will somehow make this a better world, right a wrong of longstanding, or prepare the way for some brighter day.

Mentors of these people tend to be folklore idols, whose example inspire the native to preserve and promote some cultural ideal.

There is an element of populism...a certain appreciation for values which have their origin in the masses. They are proud of their roots, and yearn to make others appreciate traditional cultural legacies. Whether their lives are public or private, they leave their mark."

Like a Star of David on a glass bottle which turns up 70 years later - in a dump created by a madman on the loose in the Autumn of 1938.

Some natives with Chiron in Cancer include: Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Germaine Greer, Marc Edmund Jones, Ringo Starr, and Lee Harvey Oswald.

And here's a quote from author Fyodor Dostoevsky who shares the Sun Sco-Moon Gemini combo of Kristallnacht in his natal chart:

"If the devil doesn't exist, but man has created him, he has created him in his own image and likeness."

And sometimes he wears a very silly looking moustache.

Benjamin Franklin's Solar Return 2008

Born of a humble family in Boston, MA on Jan 17, 1709 (exact time unverified--using *10:30 am LMT as shown at --other possible birth times listed at end of post) Ben Franklin's Solar Return for 2008 falls on Jan 17.

This 15th child of 17 apprenticed to a printer when he was 12, and began his own printing company, age 17. The 10:30 am natal chart has shown links from the Solar Arc Directions for today which is one of the methods I use for deciding which chart to work with when an historical person's birth time is in question...simple synchronicity (as if there is such a thing!)

Fame and success attended Mr. Franklin whose Pre-Natal Eclipse Series, 14South, brings just that--success when an obsessive idea is finally accepted, then Jupiter brings along the promised success. His Jupiter, whose natural house is the 9th house of Publishing, Philosophy, and Religion, is happily placed in business-oriented Cancer, although Rx--which gave Franklin something of a maverick flavor.

ASC 7Ari14, sign of the pioneer, gives active Mars as chart-ruler, and Franklin is known to have been robustly healthy as a youth. Neptune, which he would not have been aware of in his lifetime, is in 1st house, indicating some confusion and early loss, and a talent for role-playing and deception--useful traits for an ambassador and politician to possess.

In the Placidus house system Saturn is barely in 1st house which gives stability to the personality, plus, early hardship and work (apprenticed at 12 years old)--Saturn rules 10th house 3Cap44, with pleasant Venus in Capricorn at MC (arts; literature.)

Mars applies to sesquiquadrate with Uranus (1A31) but approaches an even closer trine to Pluto (0A16.) The Mars/Chiron combo = the sacred warrior archetype, and there is a separating trine with creative Neptune...good for public relations and promotions...and for secretive pursuits such as Freemasonry meetings and rituals.

In her book, New Insights in Astrology, Nona Gwynn Press gives the sequiqradrant (135 degr) as having transformative power.

You will recall his rather funky promo for his Almanac where he published an "astrological prediction of death" for one **Titus Leeds, a rival almanac publisher. This ruse, a preface in the 1st edition of Poor Richard's, was carried on for years and gained Franklin much notoriety while promoting sales. Leeds did not cooperate and die at the appointed time yet Franklin insisted each year that Leeds was dead and that others had assumed publication of his almanac.

One assumes this farce aided almanac sales for Mr. Leeds as well, and I suspect they held in common brotherhood in a certain organization.

(BTW: I've gotten to where I only change house systems with historical charts when there's a known chart to duplicate--usually with Regiomantanus, or whatever was originally used at the time. Here I stick with Placidus. In this case, Venus is near enough to MC to be possibly placed in 9th house of Publishing.)

Jupiter in 4th house has associations with publishing success so the 10:30 am chart 'works' for his fortune being made in Publishing--he began Poor Richard's Almanac in 1733 and retired, age 42, in order to devote himself to Science until Politics 'called' him in appr 1753. Quite a whistle heard round the world--with America the decided winner.

However, if you look at the chart for 1:30 am, Jupiter and Uranus are placed in 9th house while Pluto (linked with the masses and with Publishing) falls in 10th house of Career and Public Standing. Yet this birth time puts n Moon in AQ--29AQ52, 4th house. Was Franklin's Sun in Cap with Moon in the humanitarian and scientific (and astrological) sign of the Water Bearer? Or is Moon in mystical Pisces as is so often said?

The chances during the 24 hours of his day of birth do favor the Pisces Moon, but just in case, here are the Images for Integration for both combos...

Sun Cap-Moon AQ: A prophetic poet is awarded high honors...An historian points the way to the future...Having struggled unaided to the peak, a mountaineer hitches a ride on a passing helicopter.

Worldy ambition and success mixed with furturistic, scientific concerns. See what I mean?

Now here's the Sun Cap-Moon Pisces blend: A child builds a sandcastle of reinforced concrete...Bilbo in Tokein's 'Lord of the Rings'...'Bathers in a Landscape' by Paul Cezanne...A wine collector uncorks a rare vintage to celebrate a success. (Sun Sign-Moon Sign, Chas & Suzi Harvey.)

With our decider-in-chief off the continent (and as usual I feel a certain bouyancy), we're forced to decide for ourselves which combo may better describe Benjamin.

Franklin was ahead of his time and one cannot rule out a Pisces Moon, the sign which contains all other signs before it, and Cap-Pisces is a humanitarian combination--actually the humanitarian businessman. A New Moon personality, Franklin was emotional, impulsive, subjective, and intuitive.

His most powerful natal midpoint picture (which I entered on the chart but didn't complete due to lack of space, so here it is) has Jupiter/Pluto (plutocrats!) pointing at scientific reformer and rebel, Uranus...

Jup-Pluto = Uranus: intense application of resources to establish new perspectives; turning the tables; getting back on track or finding a better one; fanatical striving for improvements; sudden reform; adjustment to new circumstances (Tyl; Ebertin.)

In the 10:30 am chart, pictured here, there is also a YOD (Finger of God) which I neglected to colorize for you but will mention since it relates to a special life purpose but also to health issues.

Moon-Venus = Uranus: sudden romantic feelings and attachments (he was a laydees' man--and had Mars-Pluto midpoint conj Desc, 10:30 am); a periodic and sudden manifestation of sexual desire (hubba hubba); fits of emotion and irritability.

Ebertin gives Moon-Venus as glandular secretions and Uranus disrupts--this may cause convulsive states when triggering the Moon-Venus midpoint.

Well, I don't know what Franklin actually died from but it couldn't have been good--it killed him.

Now on that sassy note, let's consider his Solar Return chart for Jan 17, 2008:

Historical charts for our Founding Fathers intrigue me and I tend to use them to 'speak for' America in the here-and-now (or for whatever time frame under consideration.)

So you can imagine my semi-surprise when I found Hillary Clinton's campaign 2008 written all over it. And since Ben himself is no longer with us these 218 years, I shall give a pass to his SR as a personal map for him and mosey on to Hillary implications.

Primarily it's the Taurus Moon in 10th house of Public Status and Career that clued me in...

Mars/MC = Moon: publicity; an emotional appeal (!); changing status through emotional "feel" !!

Yes, Hillary is being said to be using a newly accessible emotional style. She's found her "voice" she says...and, this reluctant astrologer notes, her tear ducts along with it. Weepy crocodiles the world over are tres proud!

Venus-Jupiter = Pluto: publicity; the world view (as in NWO?); popularity; unbounded enthusiam (she's waited so long to take hold of the New Millennium baton...she expects it and perhaps has been promised it. Guess the New Moon over New Hampshire was Hill and John McCain hooking up.)

Sun-Uranus = Neptune: self-deluding schemes for ego recognition; blind zeal can only be detrimental; unexpected events connected with flying, water, or navigation.

Hey! that last sounds like Bush's tour of the Middle East when he was forced to motor instead of helicoptering--and of course, Franklin's Solar Return is also a simple transit chart for Jan 17. Perhaps Clinton will experience similar delays on the campaign trail--or Bush may have vehicle troubles again.

Pluto-MC = North Node (the public; associations): the desire to gain leadership; influence over other people.

Mars-NN = MC: excellent teamwork; partnership values are important.

Well, there you have it. Hopefully, Benjamin isn't squirming in his grave at this post with its quirky insinuations concerning our current outrage--er, I mean presidential campaign.

If he is, I'll be more than happy to fluff his pillow which will give me a chance to apologize to a Founding Father for the America this squad of politicians have brought upon us and upon the world.

Global domination indeed.

*other possible birth times: 11:00 am, 1:30 am, 9:40 pm, all LMT.

**Titus Leeds' predicted date of death: Oct 17, 1733, "3 hos, 29 mins PM"...a request for calculation supposedly made to Franklin by Mr. Leeds...cheeky monkeys!

Eugene Debs still speaks convincingly

Information Clearing House Newsletter

News You Won't Find On CNN

"It is extremely dangerous to exercise the constitutional right of free speech in a country fighting to make democracy safe in the world...

These are the gentry who are today wrapped up in the American flag, who shout their claim from the housetops that they are the only patriots, and who have their magnifying glasses in hand, scanning the country for evidence of disloyalty, eager to apply the brand of treason to the men who dare to even whisper their opposition to Junker rule in the United States. No wonder Sam Johnson declared that "patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel." He must have had this Wall Street gentry in mind, or at least their prototypes, for in every age it has been the tyrant, the oppressor and the exploiter who has wrapped himself in the cloak of patriotism, or religion, or both to deceive and overawe the people...

Every solitary one of these aristocratic conspirators and would-be murderers claims to be an arch-patriot; every one of them insists that the war is being waged to make the world safe for democracy. What humbug! What rot! What false pretense! These autocrats, these tyrants, these red-handed robbers and murderers, the "patriots," while the men who have the courage to stand face to face with them, speak the truth, and fight for their exploited victims-they are the disloyalists and traitors. If this be true, I want to take my place side by side with the traitors in this fight."

Eugene V. Debs [The Canton, Ohio, Anti-War Speech; June 16, 1918]

Thanks for the above quote go to the excellent Information Clearing House#

An orator whose communication skills rivaled those of the great William Jennings Bryan, Debs' anti-war speech given in Canton, Ohio on June 16, 1918 is perhaps his most famous speech, while his appeal to the jury and statement to the court at his trial for treason (arrested and imprisoned for giving this speech against America's entry into WWI) are considered two of the great classic statements ever made in a court of law.

Born in Terre Haute, IN on Nov 5, 1855, Debs has a Sun Sco/Moon Virgo personality blend and Mercury in intense Scorpio (8Sco03 Rx, and opposite Pluto...Mercury/Pluto = the orator; a sharp critic; the propagandist.)

The Sun Sco/Moon Virgo combo is intensely passionate, a relentless perfectionist, witty, conscientious, loyal, and a dedicated worker. (Dedicated to workers' issues as well, in Debs' case. And he was devoted to his wife all his life--they had no children.)

His straight-from-the-shoulder honesty and excellent mind are still on display in his speeches and can stir the heart as well as the mind of anyone who appreciates honesty and forthrightness...anyone who believes America should change course and return to higher ideals than those of the lower road brought upon us by the Bush-Cheney regime (and others--it's been a drawn-out process since Carter or even since Eisenhower, some say. Guess that would have to be Ike's warning against the "military industrial complex" notwithstanding.)

An interesting feature of Deb's natal chart (Nov 5, 1855; Terre Haute, IN; using sunrise: 6:36:55 an lmt) is his Pluto/NN conjunction at 3Tau+--the Discovery degree of Chiron (Nov 1, 1977.)

This adds an oppressive Pluto-Chiron plutocratic flavor--the very people he spoke against all his life--to his North Nodal path (connections with the public; encountering the powerful.)

Pluto conj NN gives a special knack for seeing through prevailing social trends and the necessary drive and determination to take advantage of the ability. Negatively, this conj indicates a dangerous tendency toward attempting to manipulate social forces too large to be handled with safety--it's the tiger-by-the-tail aspect. Affairs get our of hand and there is danger of collapse (The Astrologer's Handbook., Sakoian)

Prison terms which ruin one's health would definitely qualify here.

Images for Integration for Debs' Sun/Moon blend:

An artist combines simplicity with intensity in a study of still life...A scientist probes into the mysteries of the cosmos...Britten's opera Billy Budd. (Sun Sign-Moon Sign, Chas & Suzi Harvery.)

You may wish to visit the Eugene V. Debs official website where you'll find, among other things, a list of recipients of the Debs Awards Program given for contributions to the advancement of the causes of industrial unionism, social justice, or world peace. Some recipients include Molly Ivins in 2003; Howard Zinn 1998; Edward Asner 1987; and Studs Turkel in 1983.

Eugene Debs ran for US president as the Socialist Party candidate in 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912, and 1920 (in 1920 from fed prison in Atlanta, Ga) and he must have been quite a thorn in the imperialist-robber barons' sides. Pres. Wilson "vigorously denied" a request for pardon in 1921, but Pres Warren G. Harding released him under a general amnesty on Christmas Day, 1921.

Harding then invited Debs to stop by the White House and told him, "I have heard so damned much about you Mr. Debs, that I am very glad to meet you personally."

Well, I'm glad someone in the White House (ever) showed some shame and humility. Debs' humility and friendliness in prison had won him the respect of fellow prisoners, and personally I would have been honored to have met him myself.

Needless to say, Debs' health was broken by his years in confinement and he died in a sanitarium on Oct 20, 1926.

Now perhaps you read "Socialist Party" and cringe a bit, yet no one can deny that Eugene V. Debs gave his all for America and for social justice--losing his health and his citizenship in the process.

Whenever I read the words of Eugene Debs I feel proud of America and feel her spirit of decency--whenever I read the words of recent US administrations I feel anxious, depressed, and above all--threatened. Our liberties are their toys, and our freedoms are to be dispensed with asap. The attacks of 9/11 were about just that for we've been couped from without and, even more debilitatingly, from within.

But just what have I done for America lately? Grouse, complain, and dissent against Washington DC imperialists and warmongerers...while it's still permissable. Is this "extremely dangerous"? Probably so, for somewhere in Bush's back pocket there must be an imperialist's signing statement covering the abolishment of sassy blogs such as this! If not, perhaps I may up the sass (no, I don't have a Pluto-NN conj!)

Hear an excerpt of Debs' presidential campaign speech of 1904.

And now some final bon mots from Mr. Debs:

"When great changes occur in history, when great principles are involved, as a rule the majority is wrong."

"Intelligent discontent is the mainspring of civilization."

Abraham Lincoln's natal-with-assassination charts

The natal chart of Abraham Lincoln, born Feb 12, 1809, is pictured here along with the chart for the time that the sneak saboteur fired at the back of his head during a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford's Theater, Washington DC.

This is a 'companion post' of this information because images seem to display better here at Blogger (in my browser at least--perhaps in yours?) than images published at my WordPress blog Jude's Threshold where you'll find the charts' details published as a Page in the Sidebar.

I do like WordPress' Pages feature though for you can always find an article on the list.

Easy, Breezy!
